This Week on Cut Buddy’s Buddy-to-Buddy Series: The Art of the Tie.
Tying a durag sounds like a simple task until you’re standing in front of your mirror looking at a crooked cap, loose tails, and waves going nowhere. Getting the tie right isn’t just about looks, it’s about compression, consistency, and protecting the work you do with your brush. If tied wrong, you can say goodbye to all your hard work.
But don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Here’s everything you need to know to properly tie your durag for perfect 360 waves.
Why the Durag Tie Matters
A durag does multiple things: it protects your hair from external factors, acts as a style statement, and compresses and maintains waves into your scalp. But you can’t reap these benefits unless your durag is tied tight and centered.
A bad tie means your waves are lifting up instead of being compressed, and creases are all in the wrong places. When you wake up from a good night’s sleep, the last thing you want is for your style to be all over the place. This takes a lot of time to fix, time that many of us don’t have in the morning.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you start tying your durag, make sure you’ve brushed your hair. Compression of style works best on freshly brushed hair.
What makes up your wave kit
-
Hard Bristle Wave Brush: Coarse bristles meant to be the first brush in your routine.
-
Soft Bristle Wave Brush: Soft bristles help smooth out your look.
-
Lay Down Glove for 360 Waves: Optional, but helps smooth out your pattern before tying up.
-
Satin Durag: Smooth, silky compression won’t dry out your hair.
Step-by-Step: How to Tie Your Durag for 360 Waves
Step 1: Center Your Durag
Hold the durag at the seam and place it directly in the middle of your head, front to back. Your hairline should sit right at the front edge of the durag. Make sure you do this right because an off center durag means uneven waves.

Step 2: Pull the Tails Straight Back
Take both tails and pull them directly to the back, keeping them flat against the head. Use equal tension on both sides of the head.

Step 3: Cross the Tails in the Back
Once both tails are at the back of your head, cross one over the other, keeping them flat against the head. Make sure you pull down the flap to prevent bunching in the back during this step.

Step 4: Bring the Tails to the Front
After crossing, bring both tails back to the front and pull them across your forehead, just above the hairline. Ensure equal tension is kept on both sides.

Step 5: Tie Securely at the Back
After pulling the tails to the back again, it’s time to tie them together. A simple flat knot to snugly, not tightly, secure the durag works best. Tying too tight is a common mistake people make, which indents your waves or leaves a crease line.

Step 6: Let the Back Flap Hang or Tuck it
Once tied, you can decide what you want to do with the back flap, or “cape”, of your durag. You can either tuck this under the tie in the back or leave it down, both work it just depends on the look you’re going for!
Follow these steps and you’ll become a pro in no time.

Tips for Success:
-
Always brush your hair before tying to ensure proper, even compression.
-
Wear your durag overnight when possible. The longer it’s on, the better your pattern will set in.
-
Keep even tension on both tails throughout the tying process.
-
If your durag isn’t staying aligned with your hairline, make sure the seam is at the center of your head and it’s on tight enough.
-
Satin and silk durags are best, keeping your hair hydrated and locking in your pattern.
